Focus Group

Firstly,as Trigger finger is a art house films it is apart of assignment therefore it will be including drama and have a urban atmospheres which will have a direct interest in the younger audience as for the plot of our film we wish to have a narrative based on the dystopian world having no actual laws for guns and also in this world no one can get guns meaning from birth no on knows what a gun looks like.
Therefore, for the focus group it must target the younger audience at around 15 meaning that the narrative will be based upon having younger charters playing the roles. The narrative was slightly changed to make the original story make sense and in addition we have scarped the idea of having dystopian world with no gun it was changed to the main protagonist having his sister raped and kill by the anti protagonist which will all be explained through voice overs in the editing as the narrative will be following the hero as he finds the anti-protagonist and on the way of finding the anit-protagonist he comes across a paper bag with a gun inside which accompany's him through the journey of finding the villain.

In summary this films has been created with age, genre, and also lifestyle in mind as the focus group is mainly based in the younger audience who are not that interested in art house, this has given this film the chance to invite the audience into watching art by making it extremely based towards narratives that young adults and teenager will find interesting.

Lifestyles:
This will give the audience a more visual approach to the Art-house, because if Trigger Free did not have characters that had the lifestyles of the younger audience they would not have much to relate to they will not be interested in the film. therefore they will be more likely to want to watch the film if the audience was able to make a connection to the lifestyle of the actors in the film. In order for the actors to be realistic and relate to the lifestyle of the actual focus groups these include

  • School boy who lives a weird and terrible life because of false upbringings.(main Character) therefore he the audience will be able to relate possibly because they may have had the same type of problems in their past meaning they will be able to understand his type of pain. However then he finds a gun which gives him the power which could some other source of power for the audience, the is to implement his grant to happiness in a way because he then mages to be more confident knowing that no one else on this planet has this type of power. (As gun do not exist within this world.
Genre:
Trigger Free is based on a urban and film noir, it is film noir as this film uses a dramatic twist as the gun is owned by a women which shows and signify to women have equal right just as men therefore this film will also invite more females to watch it also because of the fact of the ending being with this dramatic twist signify making it more appealing to the niche audience also, This will allow the film to invite a wide range of audiences to watch the film.

Print brief Research:

In this front cover it is a visual copy of a magazine cover which has
A colour scheme: A tropical sense of film as the colours represent passion, from the font main title a image of eyes which could be a suggestion of being able to visualise the creativity of the art house genre to be able open your eyes to wider range of film texts which ray you understanding of the film  for the niche audience.

Image result for arthouse film content page magazine

Firstly, in this content page you can see the different types of films that would appeal to the niche audience which is because they will be able to get information on the characters, this will then give them and enabling way of finding out more on the characters in the films. This is targeted to on audience who understand the genre well who want more information on the whole plot of the film while finding other film in the same line of appeal.

This cover has some artistic elements that would make it seem quite spontaneous with the use of colour and the actual theme being art house gives this picture artistic. This would also highlight that this is an institution which is based on an art-house cover because of the use of . This would also look to have the logo since this would be seen as quite good.

In a majority of "The Flare" covers, these would show an artistic feature that would allow it to look unique. This cover has a black background with a contrast from the picture to make it look quite professional and have the focus point of the cover on the picture where the title is present

This is another cover that was introduced in the same year as the "BFI Flare" cover which could suggest that the use of a black background and bright text in front makes the visual point the brochure. I could also implement a similar technique with the black background and the contrast to make the text the visually appealing factor of the cover. This cover also states the different institutions that sponsors, the audience of the events can also keep up to date with the firm by following their

This front cover uses simple conventions of a film cover which has no real central image in it but i believe that is meant to be a back inside of the cover photo this is a creates the affect of being more appealing to the audience as they are then going to be to be more engaged into the central image which is because they are going to be concentrating more into the picture this is effective because then the audience are able to identify what cinema this is once engaged with the front cover itself.

MEST2: Existing product research

1) Find five arthouse film clips or sequences – ideally in a genre similar to your film idea or preferred genre.
It Follows Horror film that was designed to have an effect on the mind with the overall genre being horror, the fact the narrative is based on affecting a host psychologically which makes it an art house film because of the main plot of the film. However, it, in my opinion, has made the category with the use of a normal neighbourhood, which has made more of a diversion being able to escape the real world and be a part of this dystopian world.
Anuvahood: A crime based film, which only appeals to the younger audience who can relate and also understand this text. Therefore this text, in particular, is similar as our coursework is meant to be for a more wide range of audience, the target audience for our text is towards the younger audience just like Anuvhood. In addition, this has one key moment when the main charter Adam Deacon finds the gun under the bin which is extremely similar to our piece of text.
Slumdog millionaire: The movie tells the story of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) who is 18 years old and appears on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Jamal is one question away from the grand prize. Jamal then reminisces his life through the flashback of him living and being brought up in the slums. This is, therefore, this a relativity similar to my idea.
Kidulthood: This film was created with the intent to show the lives of teenagers who grow up in west London, which means it will mainly be more targeted audience which makes this film art house as it has Crime/indie film which can make it a part of this list as this applies to the brief to create an art house film that will target a more wide range of audience and a younger one also.
AdultHood: This is then the second part its series to connect with Kidulthood, in this part of the film Sam is released from prison 6 years later and has to confront the ones he hurt the most, therefore making it harder than being in prison in the first place. In addition to this, it makes this an art house film because it will only appeal to the more niche audience as would have kidulthood which then leads to adulthood meaning its links on after the other.

2) Write an analysis of each two- to three-minute sequence using everything you have learned about film language (camerawork, sound, mise-en-scene, editing etc.)

Slumdog millionaire: in the ending scene of the film they use subtitles to help with the scene, which has been used to help understand the Hindi within the scene which gives it that art house appeal, furthermore this film mainly appeals to the niche audience who will have an understanding of the setting of the film. Furthermore, the genre of the film consists of  Drama, romance and some fictional biopsy of the main Character who comes from the slums to becoming a Millionaire. This can be seen from the camera work following the children in the slums, the editing goes hand in hand with each other as the first beginning cuts are created like a montage of children running through the wreckage and ruins of the Mumbai. This use of editing of the film has made it very appealing of the film which helps the audience get a picture of the film in the introduction of the film, which helps give the audience an idea of what the characters leaving their home to find own hope of overcoming poverty and make something of themselves. The Final Question
Jamal is now back on the show and the whole of India is watching, including Latika and Salim. Salim redeems himself by helping Latika escape the grasp of her husband, but it is not enough to escape his past. He fills a bathtub full of rupees and gets shot in it. This shows how even though Salim (money) tried to redeem himself, his past and what he represented failed. The ending of the movie is very cliche, showing that we have switched to an escapist world. The final question is the perfect one and Jamal calls Latika for help. He has no clue and guesses and he answers correctly. Even though the plot is cliche, it is captured beautifully and Boyle uses many editing techniques to keep you on the edge of your seat. It is an exciting, fun ending. Just what escapism aims to be. Fun and exciting, not life. After the climax of Jamal winning the millions, we see him at the train station where he runs into Latika. Its a beautiful finale, where they kiss and the audience cries. Even more escapism

It Follows: In the ending scene off it follows it used the main protagonist and her male princess when he winds him over they finished the film with Following that scene, Jay and Paul (Keir Gilchrist) were seen holding hands and walking down the street near their house. During the scene, audience members could see a slowly moving body, much like the monster that follows her throughout the film, before the screen cuts to black. In the scene the use of make-up on Paul's face shows the aftermath of last nights horror of completing the "deed" of saving Jay from the curse, however not knowing that they are being followed by the curse making the ending in synergy with the working title, which is the suggestion that they will always be followed.

Anuvahood:
Towards midway in the film the main protagonist of the film finds a gun that is owned by a drug lord of west London. Under a bin which helped towards the end of the film he finds the urge to use this gun as he has solved the disequilibrium of all of his friends assets being stolen by a gang member of the main Kingpin who guns the protagonist has discovered under the bin, and, in my opinion, this helped give it that nice edge of an art house film. because its had a very urban feel to the film, therefore, it is art house and it has manged to reach to the younger audience with the use of its narrative.

Adulthood:
In the art house text, it has the same atmosphere of our film, with the use of the murder on the flat balcony. As the main protagonist/anti-protagonist who is reminiscing his previous life before he went to jail which was part of the first text (adulthood) therefore this indie makes of gang life in the west London streets are followed through with the life of on from his perspective. However, his remorse is not in given as he goes back to the same life that he grew up into which is seen by the intro scene of him killing the man who was leaving his flat which was followed by him stomping him to death. Finally, this is a suggestion of the fact even after he was segregated he would be the same.

3) Research the target audience for each film (including the BBFC certificate) and produce your own assessment of who it appeals to and why.

It follows appeals to the niche audience this is down to the fact they have a direct opinion on the narrative, it follows revealing with the narrative because of the gore, violence and the nudity has given it the certificate by the BBFC 15, it has been given this is because of the genre being Horror and also because of the gory images and strong language. This in my opinion has given it that appeal to the more mature audience who enjoy the genre that will target the individuals who are categorised as Niche who have a enjoyment for Art House film which makes it appeal to the more older and mature audience who will understand the narrative and knowledge and a intellectual skill to understand the narrative of It Follows as they are most likely still studying or have done some sort of highly skilled jobs which have required them to have a long-term time of studying, therefore this film will have put in contrast of whom the target audience is trying to target. Finally, this means they have to be able to understand the plot which will then allow them to understand the film, it follows has created this in its narrative and plot of the film.

Adulthood: This film appeals to the more younger audience who have a appeal to the gangland, which is and niche audience and even though they do glamorise gang life in the text it will have a line of appeal to the target audience of mature teenagers and young adults therefor the film will only reach a BBFC certificate of 15 as this film has the categorised to the 15 certificate such as nudity and explicit language.
Also, Kidulthood will also have the agenda as Adulthood but will have line of appeal to a more under aged audience which is not be viewed to such as 13 to 15 year olds because of the fact of social media marketing the film however the film was given a 15 but the fact if the matter is they have the idea to appeal to the youngest they can possibly can so they reach out to a more larger audience.

BBFC

1) Research the BBFC: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government? The British Board of Film Classification BBFC, previously the British Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organisation, founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works. Therefore, the BBFC have the overall rights to rate and classify a film. Therefore they will calculate a fee that it will cost the directors when they are trying to get a certificate for the film,as it is an independent body it does not link to the government but does at the same time. As they have all the rights when callsifying a film and also when analysing if it is up to the governments expectations of being screened UK cinemas.

2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.

Firstly, a film is rated whether it is on dvd on preparing to screened and all films must be make sure they have been approved by the bbfc before they can screen and release it to be viewed by the age appropriate audience. Therefore directors will send a full edited version of a piece of text which will then be approved by the organisations and will log all the improvements needed to be made and what needs to be censored. This includes
  • general context - plot, characters, outline of individual scenes
  • timings of key moments, including camera angles, type of shots, on- and off-screen moments
  • bad language, sex and drug references and so on.
Finally, if the a piece of texts contains any illegal or unacceptable behaviour the examiners will draw up a list of cuts that must be put into the work to fix the problems if the work to out reach it can be rejected altogether.
3) Read this BBFC outline of the issues faced when classifying a film. Summarise the debate in 50 words. This overall concerns the controversies that will come when a film is rated which includes the fact if it is the right certificate being given to the work.  for example, desensitising a potential viewer to the effects of violence and if the text is not in the reach of the intend certificate it will raise awareness to the audience and could affect their overall experience. Therefore BBFC must take into account

• Violence
• Sex
• Sexual Violence
• Drugs
• Horror
• Imitable Behaviour
• Discrimination
• Language
However the main over all appeal of a text is to be able to raech to widest possible audience when the text is at box office.

4) Read this BBFC section on controversial decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?

5) What are the guidelines for a 15 certificate?

A 15 certificate is given to a film however firstly the film must not be breaking the following rules,  Discrimination, Drugs, Imitable behaviour, Language, Nudity, Sex, Threat and Violence. the work must take into account that they are allowed to use the following however, they must not over do it and glorify any or to keep it to a certain extent because to get a 15 they the work must not contain make all of this context discreet and to the 15 certificate. However if the information is out of subject they turn down the work or ask make the distributor edit the work only if and when the work has been seen by the BBFC.

6) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Choose one 15-rated film from the BBFC case studies section and summarise the classification the film was given and why.

Deadpool: It rated 15 in the uk as it has the following  has been certified 15 in the UK, with no scenes cut from the film. The BBFC stated the Ryan Reynolds starring flick features "strong bloody violence, strong language and sex references.

Evaluation

Firstly what this task consisted of and what out intentions where to do and create a 30 seconded clip therefore we needed to use these key aspects of editing :

  • Match On Action
  • Shot/Reverse Shot
  • 180 Degree Rule
  • The planning processIn my opinion I think with the my group the lack of communication had a impact on the planing therefore the editing go to plan. However, the creation of planning did get completed, furthermore if the planning was not finished on time the task would have not been finished. Therefore this helped take action further when actually filming as well being more prepared of what to film and what to use.
In particular with this planning I think that there was still a lot of  room for improvement as not much was done properly and this had a problem on the
Planning had to consist of a: script, shot list, storyboard and ideas of mise en scene. As the planning was done last minute the shots had to decided on the shot, which meant we has to improvise with shots that we had to create on the scene.

    Strengths:

    1. The 180 degree rule was used correctly
    2. Managed to include some continuity editing
    3. Type of shots used (such as handheld shot) gave the video the action codes we wanted to achieve.
    Weaknesses:

    1. Some shots (such as dialogue scene) was out of frame.
    2. Background, non-diegetic audio was too loud thus making the dialogue scene inaudible.
    3. Lighting was off during some scenes (couldn't see characters).
    4. Editing was a tad bit too fast paced, causing it to be quite confusing and fast for the audience to understand what is going on.
    5. Subjects were too close to camera in the shot/reverse shots.
    6. Make more use of the DSLR - use more extravagant shots
    7. Planning was done last minute - a lot of improvisation
How I will improve for my actual film, i shall use a better sound quality to help understand the genre this will also allow the and also have better communication with my group peers to make sure that everything is being done correctly with in the group which will mean that the content will flow and make a better experience for the audience viewings and pleasures. Furthermore some of the shots where out frame which meant that we did not have good communication with the cameraman or just the fact we did not know how to zoom out with the lens, this in particular was because the fact that it did not have that feature thus it prevented the actors to be out of frame.

However, all in all we did mange to make a 30 second clip that had minor issue which was because the editing was done in such short amount of time, therefore if more time was give I presume we would have gotten rid of these technical issue. Also when editing we all managed to start making our clip which meant we was not technically working in group. This then lead us to think we should think about our future group working as this could mean a critique in groups when deciding for next exercise.

    Film Language test: Learner Response

WWW: You've picked out some important aspects such as eye-line match (or lack of them) and attempted to used media terminology through out. Plenty to build on here.

EBI: Written English is a massive problem. Pretty every apostrophe is wrong almost every use of terminology is spelt wrong. You must simply must write clearly and spell correctly when studying at A level.

    - In term of media analysis, you need a let more in depth in terms of what is being communicated to the audience.

-Editing is a weakness and needs revising there are no jump cuts.

How is editing used to create Drama and Tension in the opening scene ?
In this opening scene the editing helps build up a the tension by cutting the main shot of the killers face and this has a very big impact on the audience which is also a enigma code that built the suspensions. Therefore, we did not make much relationship between the killer as his face was not shown which did not only build suspense it also made it a mystery because being apart and not being aware of who the killer is the audience will feel left out and also unaware of who the killer is right from the start which makes it that one bit more dramatic when the action code occurs. Therefore because of the lack of eye-line match it makes the continuity of the editing of the opening scene more tensed.

Secondly, the slow paced editing is helps build up the tension also as the pace builds the intensity of the actual scene of the opening scene and the fact you don't see the man in the trench coats face means it make's that tension build up. In addition to this the pace of the editing of this opening scene as pace is one of the most powerful use of editing it helps the killer make the dominate character look more powerful as the camera angle is being placed low to the ground and looking up at him this helps with the slow paced editing which gives it that edge as this built up the tension also as it is very slow paced which helped with enigma codes.

Finally, the last scene of the whole ship blowing up with the drop of the cigarette on to the petrol which re-lit the fire as the fire begun again it help build that action code once the ships blows up and also increasing the devastation for the main character who is has been put out by the relentlessly unknown charter who face has still been kept out of shot, this all helped build up to the eruption of the ship which was slow which created tension for audience and gave them the indication that the character that has been given a more identification and a relationship with the audience has been perished and then followed by after with the split second of orange flames built the drama and emotive feelings.

    Editing task

Saturday night fever: This intro for this film is very iconic with the style of editing in the clip which expressed the views of the 70's and this is done from the editing of the film. Firstly, the editing is done with continuity editing which gives this a very good narrative to begin with its introduction a why i have chosen continuity editing is because they have logically placed the shots which made linked  each shot one after the other therefore we felt like as if we are following the life of the character in the film this is clearly noticed in the first shot with the shoes first we are greeted as the audience to the shoes in the store and immediately was followed to the main character showing his shoes off which is then linked with a medium close up of his shoes these jumps cuts help visualize his everything from the character within the world of the film. This is also a juxtaposition seeing the same thing at two contrasting positions.

Most of the segments of this clip because of are paced on the speed of the song and how to the speed of his walk therefore they show his shoes and feet a which are moving in beat to the song and this helps build a relationship with the character which is a key thing in the narrative of the film as this is a main character/star of the film meaning they will want him on screen most of the time and that is why we get a opening scene at his point of view so the audience will get a idea of the character. A example of this is we get a jump cut to his literal point of view of him approaching the women which gave the audience a very big impacting view for his whole life. And this was all lead up from the shoes as after the shoes he then went to the clothing shop and put the deposit down for the shirt and this gave a  build up to the main shot of why he does all this which is for women and to look presentable for them and that is all down to the continuity editing of the clips which gave it a much more bigger effect on the audience.

Even though sound dose not come into editing it helped with its diegetic sound when the jump cut show a low angle shot of the main character and with the diegetic sound of the shoes tapping it gave the shot the purpose for him to express and show off his essence and they have done this by using the continuity editing of the main charter and his shoes which is the main shot that the music begins with and this juxtaposition was followed with a eye-line shot of the characters face and eyes and thus my point of continuity editing which shows all the links he has a massive in how he dresses; shoes , the shirt and the women and these all go hand in hand with each each other. As they have a connection which gave lead the overall answer of him being a man who will spend alot of money for women to preserved him in a sexual manner.

Finally, we also get a shot of him eating food which is a very odd cut and that is because we dont really get a any shots of him making money until the end an that has the audience wondering what he does for a living to afford all these lavish items like the clothes and shoes. Therefore we receive as the audience the shot of him running with the paint can and holding the paint can as that is his main source of income in fact that is why he went out to get the paint in the first place. Therefore all these shots helped build the individuals ethos. Shockingly this only just the opening scene of the film wich means the edit has a very massive impact on the whole ingenuity of the film which mean editors msut take everything into consideration before actually editing and that is why content is so effective from the way it is morphed.
